Contact Lenses and Work

I’m actually emailing this post to myself so that nobody in IT sees my browser going to a site called Domination and Mastery.  I’m very unused to hiding my proclivities, even at work, so it’s a bit of a new experience for me.   Not that my new job is restrictive in the way my last one was – there they simply told me up front that they watched all browser activity and any “non compliant” activity would result in dismissal.  Even posting to technical forums was absolutely disallowed, what a joke for a programmer!
I’m waiting for the girls to drop by with my sunglasses, I left this morning while it was still dark out and as a result didn’t think to bring them, and now the sun is shining fiercely and with my eyes hurting already I don’t feel like driving home without.  And why are my eyes hurting?  Well I just got contact lenses, for the first time in over ten years, and I am not used to them.  I do see better with them as they cure the astigmatism better than glasses, and I found out I actually have peripheral vision when not wearing glasses!  I think I’d really favour Lasic surgery but funds don’t support that idea at present.
The girls attended the Democratic caucus for our precinct last night.  I didn’t attend due to not being American but apparently it wouldn’t have mattered – I just wouldn’t have signed in or voted.  While our precinct went 7-4 for Obama Texas as a whole went for Hillary, as mitda was hoping.
I’ve actually done so much work this morning my hands are cramping from typing, so I’m going to end this post and see whereabouts the girls are at.  After they arrive I’m going to take the new (to us) car in for an oil change and Spring checkup around the corner and let my eyes and hands rest for an hour or so.

Newest Shit n Things

I’ve really been remiss at blogging, what with car issues, a new job etc etc. Yesterday mitda and I celebrated our anniversary with an evening out at a smoky bar with great food and a lot of people playing Texas hold em. We didn’t join in the card games but it was a great atmosphere.

After messing around with two Mercedes (a 300ce and a 190e) we settled on a BMW as our 3 rd family car. It’s nice, big enough to carry the four adults around in comfort (it’s a 750iL long wheelbase model) and the V12 packs enough punch to haul the package pretty quickly. Everyone has had a try at driving it, even emmie who is unused to big cars. Of course it’s not new, not by a long shot, but it has reasonably low mileage and we purchased it for a good $3k less than its Edmunds.com price rating.

The job is going reasonably well. I like the place and like the people and the project doesn’t look dauntingly difficult. Just enough to be interesting. All in all I’m hoping to settle things down financially and personally in the next few months. It looks like mitda will also be returning to work and 3 income will be a nice change for the household.

Even More Shit n Things

Today mitda got her hair cut in a more modish fashion, and I picked up a few clothes suitable for work at the new place. I’ve been working on the new car a fair bit and it now picks up speed much better and the idle is smooth. It’s rather fun working on the car, not that I’ve done anything difficult to it. It also saves a good deal of cash that would otherwise go to a mechanic. The internet has proved a handy mechanics’ tool as well, as I found out things about the particular model and the symptoms it was having from various car owner forums.

I have today and tomorrow free, and then I go back to work. Here’s hoping this will be a job I can stay at for a decent length of time.

Back to Work Next Week

This morning the girls and I are having a sit at a local coffee shop. As of next wednesday I am officially employed again, having fought through a 3.5 hour interview yesterday. It looks like a pretty good gig, mostly open source software stack and not too much undue pressure. It’s warm and sticky in central Texas today, not wintry at all, more like a late Canadian Spring. Ah well, at least it’s below 80 degrees for now.

We brought the new (to us) car today. We call it black and tan after the famous drink. It’s a subtle car in some ways, you don’t feel your speed, even while accelerating quickly, but it really does go. It could use new plugs and a new air filter most likely, and that might improve the mileage some. But since I’m going to be working I’m not going to worry about the fuel costs too much, just put em down as a business expense and write off the tax.

It looks like mitda will be doing some political work for the next election. Perhaps she will make some contacts outside of the M/s community : ), although it’s with some slice of irony that a person in the M/s community has put her forward I’m a bit on the apathetic side viz politics but I don’t actually disagree with mitda’s goals so she’s welcome to have them. Certainly any new government is liable to be better than the current set of mofo’s.

So one more week at home with the girls and then back to work for me. Luc is certainly happy about it as money woes stress him more than the rest of us.

Enjoying Local Hospitality

Last night we attended a munch and a party in the local scene. As it happens the munch was for one local group and the party hosted by another, although there is a large crossover in membership of the two groups and many of the people at the munch also appeared at the party. It’s very pleasant having a local scene, with people one can discuss M/s and related aspects IRL rather than just online, and even have a bit of fun scening in public. There was even some discussion among myself and a few other doms about the “daddy dom” aspects of my relationship with emmie and theirs with their respective little girls, something that is not often easy to discuss IRL as people who don’t relate can get pretty quickly squicked. (we talked about getting together once a month or so and one of the doms had the fastest and best quip – that we should get together at Chuck-E-Cheese’s 🙂 ).

Both mitda and emmie had a pretty good time, I believe Luc did as well, (especially when a number of submissive women were leaning over him checking out his cologne), With the different groups in town a weekend without a munch, party, or both is becoming a rarity.

It could be argued that we are too involved in M/s and not involved enough in more vanilla activities but the reality is that most of the M/s oriented gatherings are not strip-n-beat parties but vanilla social gatherings that just happen to be with like minded individuals from whom one doesn’t have to dissemble and hide one’s peculiarities.

Akbar the 2nd Saab

Today emmie and I took a short road trip down to San Antonio to purchase a new (to us) vehicle. We are nothing if not consistent in our albeit obscure vehicular tastes, as the new car is our 2 nd Saab 9-5, both black, although this one is the wagon version rather than the sedan that Luc drives. It is also a veg-o-matic as emmie is still not confident with the stick shifts on our other two cars. This car is mostly for me although I will be sharing it with emmie, as she doesn’t drive a lot in general. It will feel a bit weird driving a family wagon, but being a Saab wagon ameliorates the “soccer mom” imagery somewhat ;).

What the Saab does have is an ass-kicking turbocharger that powers the wagon from 0-60 in a healthy 6 seconds. We’ve been making jokes about lead footed mitda ever since she found herself driving 115mph without intending to on one of the new local highways – I’m going to have to avoid falling into that trap myself in the Saab if I’m going to keep my record of having driven for 23 years without a speeding ticket, something that no one who has ever seen me drive can quite believe.

Convoluted Day

The last post completely upset mitda.  We worked it out – I think she understands my viewpoint better now without my having had to be too heavy handed.  emmie was another side to the story, but I’ll get back to that in a future post, I hope (you can see emmie’s own story on her blog listed on the blogroll to the left).

It was a weird day all round.  It came to the point where I had to deal with my co-worker’s sulkiness directly and get us back on track to test our development work and put it into production.  At the same time I am discussing with a high profile firm a new position that could possibly involve some high level management work and systems architecture, rather than the grunt work I’ve mostly been stuck with since moving countries out of the blue last year.  It would be very nice to be involved at a decision making level again.

I hope this humidity and damp quits soon.  We’ve had the 3rd wettest summer on record here this year and the constant gray and humid air is dragging me out badly.  Anyone have an extra sun lamp they want to donate?  I really didn’t expect to need one in Texas.
